Start with the terminology
“Lymphatic drainage” can describe different things. A spa may use the phrase for a light, rhythmic, general-wellness massage intended to feel calming and comfortable. Experiences vary, and this kind of session should not be presented as a way to diagnose or treat a condition.
At Lively Foot, the service described here is a general-wellness lymph-style massage. It is not medical manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), and Lively Foot does not provide specialist MLD for lymphoedema.
How specialist MLD is different
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialised type of skin massage used in lymphoedema care. Cancer Research UK says that MLD should be provided by a therapist specially trained in the relevant technique. NHS guidance describes lymphoedema treatment as healthcare that may require assessment and specialist support.
That clinical service is different from a light-touch wellness session. If you have diagnosed lymphoedema, new or unexplained swelling, or are recovering from surgery, speak with a qualified healthcare professional or lymphoedema service before booking any massage.
What a general-wellness session may involve
- light, rhythmic touch rather than deep pressure
- a discussion about comfort, preferences, and areas to avoid
- a slow, quiet pace intended for relaxation
- the option to pause or change pressure at any time
There is no promise that a session will move fluid, change swelling, or improve a symptom. Do not use massage to postpone medical care.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is this a general-wellness lymph-style massage or specialist MLD?
- What training does the practitioner have for the service being offered?
- Should I obtain medical advice first because of my symptoms, diagnosis, pregnancy, medication, or recent procedure?
